Which digital camera to choose: SLR or Point&Shoot? - tips point and shoot digital camera

Which should I choose? I like to think I'm a pretty good photographer, but I hate carying a large camera with me while I was traveling.
I've heard that some compact cameras offer similar performance compared to the SLR. If so, I prefer a point and shoot camera.
